A prolific producer and in-demand DJ, S.P.Y. is one of drum and bass music’s hottest commodities. We managed to grab five minutes with him ahead of his set on the Valve Sound System on 28th September.

Of your extensive back catalogue, which are the releases you are most proud of?
To be honest I am proud of every single release. No matter which label my tracks were released on I have worked really hard on every one and each release has helped me to progress as a producer.
Have you got any forthcoming releases?
I have just got back into the studio after touring my first album and I’m busy working on a few different projects. I’m also focusing on producing my second album due for release on Hospital Records next year, which is definitely keeping me busy!
When did you move to the UK? And was it to pursue your career as a producer? I’m guessing climate wasn’t an influencing factor!
I moved to London in February 2003 and you’re right, the weather was definitely a shock! Initially I moved to the UK to study graphic design, but I quickly got involved in the drum and bass scene here. In 2005 I decided to follow my dream of becoming a music producer and began writing my own tracks, thankfully there was a good response.

What’s the Drum & Bass scene like in Sao Paulo?
As I have been living in London since 2003 I don’t have too much involvement in the Sao Paulo drum and bass scene. The scene is still continuing to grow however, with some dedicated producers really pushing the sound and keeping it alive.

Do you enjoy playing to the Sheffield crowd?

Definitely, Sheffield is always a crazy one – There are a lot of true drum and bass followers out there who know how to appreciate the music. I’m looking forward to be back in September!
